#EDU407 Just read Brittney's vocabulary lesson plan. I wanted to highlight how she focused on the elements of fairy tales. There are many tier II words that will follow students forever from fairy tales. You can also think of learning vocabulary as part of learning concepts.
The key with academic vocabulary is to look for the concepts that cut across disciplines or central to the discipline. Fairy Tales like Brittney points out provide a good opportunity to learn words.
"Introduce the main elements of a fairy tale (fantasy story, has magic or spells, animals act like humans, once upon a time, good guys vs. bad guys, princes, princesses) and have the children define these words by creating pictures to describe them."
At this grade level those may in essence be "tier III" words but introducing them is an easy way to differentiate for students. Kids pick up words in the strangest of ways.
These are a lot of words. I may shrink the list down. Do not be afraid to use words like anthropomorphism or protagonist and antagonist.
