* blacks are incarcerated at a rate of 1,408 per 100,000 while whites are incarcerated at a rate of 275 per 100,000.

a mistrust of government is understandable.
This means in most schools you will have students who have a parent in the system in every classroom, even more if you count extended family.
Ignoring fault, history and racism, just having a negative relationship with law enforcement impacts your identity and thus literacy practices.
There would be no Otis Redding or A$AP Rocky without the African Griot, blues captured the misery of Jim Crow, hip -hop Urban decay. Yet at the same time Winn shows a spirit exist in these movements tnat transcend miseries (Bettina Smith on our campus).
