Update on our @goifoundation #IndieWeb and #OER Ghana project sponsored by @MozillaOpenLeaders and @scsu

I am on the Advisory Board to the Global Open Initiative Foundation in Accra, Ghana. Last year Southern Connectuct State University provided $200 seed money to pay for hosting costs for Sadik, a founder, and I  to start a club encouraging people to build personal websites and take control of their social stream.

Mozilla Open Leader Fellowship

After getting the program up and running Sadik and I were awarded a fellowship from Mozilla to develop the program and then train an additional ten leaders in Ghana to start clubs back on their campuses. The goal is  to create an Open Educational Resource network across Ghana.

We are launching the 10 week program in February and will conclude with a two day Camp in Accra, Ghana.

Elm City Webmakers

A similar club is relaunching in New Haven called the Elm City Webmakers: http://elmcitywebmakers.com/. I used to run it on campus. This club will offer after school training for all ages, students, parents, grandparents. We begin on Monday! It is cosponsored by Concepts for Adaptive Learning and Junta.

Like the Ghana program anyone who shows up will get a free website. We will also have a free chat room and a wiki for students to share ideas.
We are currently applying for grants to secure free transportation for  Hamden and NHPS students.

I applied for a social justice grant and a sabbatical to support this work but I unfortunately wasn't awarded either. Luckily Nate Angell  set up a fundraiser and will donate all the money to the Global Open Initiative.
