Webmentions do work and look better with microformats.
This is why #IndieWeb struggles in WordPress. It is amazingly hard to add properties to HTML templates and not have other theme developers or plugins step on them.
Part of the reason I walked away. If a CMS gets so big you can't choose what properties to add to HTML then it is no place for me
