In terms of your model why not build in a little bit more of a Patreon model. I know it cou;dn't be taken to scale but revenue is revenue.
I pat a five dollar #GinaTax every month to Think Up. I don't care (that much) about who I talk to most on Twitter nor who changed their profile. I just want to say Thank You to Gina Tripani for years of podcasting and being a voice of reason around the open web.
Why not add a little note on withknown.com about paying for an open license? Something like "Educators can take a $250 tax write off for educational supplies. You can choose to set your level of support for Known...."
Your other model feature, additional support, is very common in the Wordpress community. You can get a "free theme" but if you do the "pro version" you get access to special forums or email support.
