History of George Soros Conspiracies
The conspiracies that swell around George Soros trace to centuries old tropes for the modern era. A modailty for modems to make monsters since the 1990s. The memes and lies also, in my opinion, point to classic russian disinformation techniques. The problem is after 2004 it became almost impossible to separate russian disinformation and dark money campaigns of the far-right. You mix in big oil and their procilvity to fund liars, from time to time, and you have a perfect mix for pronounced nonsense.
The very first public Soros conspiracy researchs have identified involved István Csurka in 1992. A far-right Hungarian Parlimentarian candiate Csurka drew comparisons between Soros and a Jewish World Conspiracy. These lies trace back to centuries old antisemitic tropes. The Soros conspiracies then began to accelerate after 1995.
In 1995, according to reporting in the Washington Post and the Financial Times, when russia was negotiating an International Monetary Fund loan, the security services accused non-governmental organizations, especially Soros's Open Society of being CIA fronts trying to undermine russian sovereignty. The report fell into Western reorter hands during intense negotiations.
Then you had the Republics of former Yugoslavia. Hardlinerss, and factions in russian Intelligence viewed Balkans not as a place for superpower rivalry. Instead Russia,a Great power, should not have to compete with the West for power and influence or support fellow Orthodox Slavs. It was an area of special interests. In February 1994, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) gave an ultimatum to forces fighting within 20 kilometres of Sarajevo. NATO intervened. George Soros, through the Open Society, supported former occupied Repulics aligning with the West, EU, and NATO. As hardliners came to power in russia, and the FSB wrestled control from oligarchs and gangsters, to become the oligarchs and gangsters any efforts at stable democracies was underminded.
Russia spends billions on Active Measures and hybrid warfare techniques. They muck about in Democracies to prove Democracy can't work, because people always muck it up. George Soros fits the model of russian disinformation so well. First is the technique of inversion. You take the strengths and turn them into weaknesses. Soros is a Holocaust survivor. Call him a Nazi. Soros donates to demoncracy movements. Label him a corrupt oligarch. More importanly you have the antisemetic tropes. The idea of a Jewish puppet master pulling all the strings is centuries old. Soros conspiracies, since Orbán also tied them to migration, and russia's use of coerced migration as hybrid warfare, also made Soros consipiracies Islamaphobic. A Jewish puppet master who used Muslims to destroy the West.

The way Soros Conspiracies have moved over the last three dedades mirros so much disinfo. Like many online mistruths members of far-right and far-let parties joined in the nonsense. In the United States of America this was often far-right fringe eleemnts of the GOP, that now control the party. This became more pronounced after 2004. The John Birch Society, Big Tobacco, and Big Oil had been procucing propaganda that often aligned with the Russian Fedseration goals since 1992 or earlier. Two major developments occured in 2004: the Orange Revolution in Ukraine and George Soros declaring his goal of making sure George Bush was not elected. Suddenly Soros conspiracies took off in America. From 2004-2013, the era of blogs and Tea Party, before social media, Soros took off.
The myths never stopped in Hungary. In fact, there are many direct connections between the Soros conspiracies in both countries. Mainly Arthur Finklestein and George Brinbaum. These political technologist invented Soros as the enemy for Viktor Orbán when they joined his campaign in 2008. They also helped Bibi get elected back in the day and would go on to assist MAGA in 2016. Then you have companies like Blackcube, shady social media research org attaxched to ex-Israeli intelligence types. They did work for MAGA and Orbán. You also have the rise of state media in America with Fox News, X, and Truth Social. Hungary also had consolidated media owned by oligarchs close to the State.
