Kathy Schrock comments that she reads mass magazines to see how they are doing learning but not in educational settings. Says she often contacts authors and discusses how their ideas may apply to education. She says the companies often share free stuff.
Steve asks Julie, “At what point will students want to change their own learning?” Julie comments that we have a long way to go. That we need personalized learning and developing our own learning paths.
Julie Lindsay then chimes in about using connections and collaborations for social change and good. Getting students to fix their place. She discussed her initiatives of live events from around the world. It is part of her flat classroom series.
Steve Hargadon says their is a distinction between personal learning and personalized learning in terms of who controls the content. He asks is there a same distinction with student voice? Bringing them to the adult table? Shannon explains how important authentic audiences are for real voices.
Shannon McClintock Miller reminds us to noit forget about the student voices. We need to make them the focus of our connections. They are moving the library to the center of the school. They are using the student voice in the design,

Esther talking about the idea that journalism is the 21st century curriculum. I think it is the idea of meaning making to make sense with the world using digital tools.
Steve starts the what are you passionate about segment. Esther Wojcicki, a formal journalist, shares her lessons about collaboration over the past 30 years as a classroom teacher.
Peggy George in the chatroom writes “to librarians the world is their classroom and that isn’t always the case for teachers who feel isolated in the classroom.”
Esther Wojocki: You have to have an audience to collaborate. You need to show the world why you will collaborate. Esther also commented on the idea that the internet is the learning commons.
Esther Wojociki states that it is about a culture. You have to create a culture of collaboration. The teacher/leader sets up the expectations.
Kathy Shcrock agrees with the idea that you teach and model collaboration first. Steve Hargadon asks that if as folks like Rheingold suggest it isn’t something we have to teach. Kathy and Julie bring up point that cultural differences make the teaching of collaboration as a process important.
We are discussing how you move from connecting to collaboration. I wonder if connecting comes before collaboration.
