@davidbraze was Just citing much of your NIH vocabulary work when I was pointing out saying "science of reading" while basing definition of reading on an SVR model is by defintion an oxymoron.
@SaraJPeden Grab of relevant readings I could quickly curate together: https://jgregorymcverry.com/music/index.php/s/Eq8ZB5rUHPEeYKN Basic gist: even Tunmer uses a more complicated model, the biggest critque of SVR is lack of vocab and prior knowledge, then lack of distal mediators
Just calling it "Science of Reading" is proof enough... Who would be against science? Just those ignorant brainwashed teachers, that's who... Yet scratch surface and you find it is a very limited survey (or disproven like SVR) view of science
It is teacher blaming. They are either too ignorant to know they are wrong because all those teachers in education programs preach "whole language" which in pop culture articles like @ehanford work means three cueing systems and anything not phonics
@SaraJPeden I will. It was late on Thanksgiving and citations didn't fit in tweets. Will need to write a blog post. All back versions of Handbook on Reading Research openly released. Good place to start .
I think my current definition (and I borrow heavily from Gee; Leander and Knobel, Snow) Active process of encoding and decoding meaning on the world through agentive participation in different discourses and communities
Terms of theoretical models of reading, Snow's reader, text, activity...all situated in socio-historical context, probably least nuaseating of current bunch. Watch #lra19 hashtag..I will ask around for other models...but SVR...not accepted science
Where I think tech can help (actually one of the highest grossing verticals in app stores...kids reading apps), phonics so systematic machine learning will be better than people. Now when I want to know a kids phonics level, I look at their writing
Yet we also know phonics instruction we have to do "whole class" as when teachers try to individualize...the whole class control out performs. So now with Fundations.....my kid stuck drawing letters in air and studying digraphs he has long mastered
But I pretty much agree with folks that most commercial programs, Caulkins, F+P Guided Reading, are nonsense..nor am I fan of self selected readers workshop, mainluy because teachers need to know books to teach them well, can't know 25 at once.
@SaraJPeden ooooh now I get it...I crossed streams, was discussing same topic in two different threads...yeah the advocacy is nonsense and it is being framed as a blame game of teachers and teacher prep...also conflates miscue analysis
@SaraJPeden I don't put much weight in the mathematical models of comprehension....mainly becuase I think comprehension is multifactored and we don't know enough about multi factor assessments to even assume we could build the regression model
Did NRP do a meta anlysis of phonics research and conclude it does a bang up jpb of teaching reading. Yes? Why? Becuase it works..and because nature of instruments and assessments. Phonemic awareness and phonics easier to more reliably measure
Does seem straneg to use the meme "science of reading" and then base it on a theoretical model of SVR to which there is zero to little scientific evidence to support. It is all NRP, which wasn't an efficacy study at all, and left out huge swaths of research
Also model that consistently been shown to explain less variance than other attempts to model comprehension. Put "simple view of reading model" in Google scholar, almost all studies w/ empirical evidence (Gough & Tunmer had none) do not support
Though Gough and Tunmer proposed (but did nothing to prove a model)"R = D x C, where each variable ranges from 0 (nullity) to 1 (perfection)" is by definition an attempt to mathematically model reading.
In the thread, granted it branched many ways so i could have lost meaning, some meant facotr in the more "pedestrian" sense and others in the more modeling of comprehension sense. Since folks talking research important to agree on these definitions
So when people say "we need to stop teaching skills and do more explicit phonics.." they sometimes mean strategy instruction around vocabulary and comprehension which can not be taught to automaticity. I also saw "factor" being used two ways
