Greg McVerry@jtbatells #lra18 writing predictive models for writing much more difficult and takes massive data sets, than explicit html or metadata tags that easily parsed but I think utilizng tools to count claims, evidence, etc more efficient than humans. Let us do the hard work.
Greg McVerry@jtbartles and if literacy researchers are not situated to do this work we need to collaborate with folks in comp sci programs not situated to do literacy work. #lra18
Greg McVerry@jtbartles I am so stoked to use machine learning and datasets in #literacy research. Positing now I can use an html parser and growth curve modeling as a decent proxy for overall digital #literacies skills #lra18
Greg McVerry@jtbartels #lra18 My questions to the Dean's "Why do you keep hiring literacy research faculty who can't conduct research on digital coding/back-end of software?" #lra18 Imagin hiring literacy researchers who couldn't write books but telling to research reading
Greg McVerryHere is a link capturing the way Ben does research for his dog breed podcast: https://quickthoughts.jgregorymcverry.com/2018/10/09/shifting-literacies-in-elementary-school-writing #lra18
Greg McVerry@kpaciga #lra18 At same time the 1:1 screen time is different. Been trying to stress co-screentime with my children. Taking away individual devices, even after agreed time, can cause rage..not true when they are all engaged in cooperative screen time play
Greg McVerryThe day after I taught my 10 year old and his friend what a gif is and how to find it this slideshow made it through school and was built on by many in a day (parents know I am sharing) https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1TZy-EElXGFfrD4YgAD9YE5Ulc2qzzea0QwubDUxCZxk/edit?usp=sharing #lra18
Greg McVerry@DrCCassano Here is my 2nd graders websites: https//dogzone.jgregorymcverry.com and https//stuffedworld.dogzone.jgregorymcverry.com Recorded some think-alouds with Ben learning CSS. I will edit and post them tomorrow. #lra18
Greg McVerryNothing worse than a spelling mistake in a subdomain...had a clone a site, make a few directs but back in business. https://samizdat.jgregorymcverry.com/review/ We don't need permission to take back work of out intellectual capital. Time we end academic exploitation. #lra18
Greg McVerryAs part of my call to "do" open rather than form ad-hoc committees and "talk" about open I challenged myself to build the infastructure for a peer reviewed samzidat journal. Today I released an MVP of the peer review system you can find here: https://samizdat.jgregorymcverry.com/review soI thought I should explain it a bit more. Academic Samizdat , is the pr
Greg McVerryGreat idea for getting student acclimated to developing open practices in grad school. Start your own journal. #lra18
Greg McVerry@SR_Toliver says, "I am asked will I be an academic scholar or apubi scholar.. I'm like duh both" @vconnecting #lra18
Greg McVerryTalking why can't we make our research more multimodal @vconnecting research. Here is one example I did...all the storify links gone: http://walkmyworld.jgregorymcverry.com/ #lra18
Greg McVerry@wiobyrne asks about binaries, I don't think binaries are ever good. In fact you acn divide the world into a group of people who like binaries and a group who do not like binaries. That is no good. #lra18
Greg McVerry@rhogue mentions a mythology study in @vconnecting I actually got my start in new literacies https://quickthoughts.jgregorymcverry.com/2018/11/21/starting-the-fantasy-module-in-edu307
Greg McVerryThe talk in #lra18 @vconnecting session reminded me of this piece: https://jgregorymcverry.com/breaking-barriers-of-connectedlearning-reflections-on-maisha-winn/ #lra18

Greg McVerryFinished MVP release of review system for samzidat publishing where we can peer review, publish drafts from your own site, have publishers review your work openly from their sites and then syndicate the final draft: http://samzidat.jgregorymcverry.com/review/2018/review-of-maunscript-01 #lra18
Greg McVerry@suupermichael We should also work to realize the layers of meaning Vygotsky has included in zone of proximal development that gets stripped int he Edubabble "gradual release of responsibility" or the folk talk of "I do, we do, you do" #lra18
