Greg McVerryIn terms of motiviation, first lets open our definition of text, the word has dominated the world for 800 years. Word and sound relationships took 800 years to get across the globe. The web reached a billion in 30 years. Is the era of text expanding?
Greg McVerryOkay @glitch and @firebase this is so cool!! Really hope we can get all the #IndieWeb building blocks up so people can drag and drop their way to learn to code or just have a push button platform. Congrats to both.
Greg McVerryGlad to see @lauraritchie launch gRSShopper. I haven't given the install a try yet, but love the idea of native webmentions in the RSS reader #el30 can't wait to give it a spin.
Greg McVerryI teach and encourage my students to teach consonant blends like br an pl. They are separate sounds but they do blend and it is perfectly normal (and good) to delineate between blends and digraphs IMO
Greg McVerryA strong video critique of facebook as a product and thinking about designing for the msot harmed. Also good #exemplartext for video prodiction/podcasting.
Greg McVerry@LScumpieru Exactly the best lesson plan writing occurs as soon as you are done teaching.
Greg McVerry@Rdene915 Glad to see the #ISTEDEPLN tackle digital equity such a crucial issue. Excited for #edtechchat as well. Hoping the kids cooperate...and then back to writing for me as well.
Greg McVerry1/2 people in room at @uconnresearch SBIR event faculty who chase grants everyday. I might have utilized a more production based pedagogy that took advantage of the audience but I always prefer uncoferences or at least some audience participation. Its simply better learning.
Greg McVerryThird you have to ask whose science and go back to the Reading First studies and What works Clearing House guidelines for research. Their rejection and inclusion criteria do not allow for any qualitative research. Defining what counts as truth influences science and truth
Greg McVerryLong and short is isn't an either or, and it isn't a "Balanced Literacy Approach" for phonemic awareness we are talking seven minutes a day in preschool and Kindergarten. For Phonics, simply having a center, Words their Way, just 15-20 a day few days a week./
Greg McVerryReflection, just increase student reflection. #formativechat
Greg McVerryPaper and pencil a close second to my favorite app #formativechat
Greg McVerryWe teach phonics not because of brain research but because of strong corollary studies., In models phonics can predict later reading success, but so can motivation....except motivation is hard to measure. We don't focus instruction on things hard to measure.
Greg McVerry@jgmac1106 I utilize some elements of Workshops but there is no way a novice teacher can do the text based analysis and text based talk required with 24 different books. For comprehension I do prefer dialogical methods, which do have replicable results.
Greg McVerryGregory Lewis from @growct reminds people to speak to program managers at SBIR reminds us at @uconnresarch event to meet with program officers often. Think my years of chasing IES and nonprofit grant gives me a heads up.
Greg McVerryI think I need to run a public service for business speakers on building power points and multimedia instruction. Reading your bullet points (....including bullet points).....you lose me.
Greg McVerryNow that I am back to doing my social stream on @withknown I need to experiment with keeping both my Tweets and webmentions threaded. Can't remember if I should reply to my tweets I syndicate or to my post to keep both threaded. I will experiment. #IndieWeb
Greg McVerryDo you think the learning is in the writing or in the reflection? can the reflection be separated from the writing? What about video our audio reflection? Do we just need to expand what counts as a text?
Greg McVerry@wimleers Yeah the new social readers really unite the read/write space. I play on @swentel's Indigenous on Android (connected to @aaronpk's Aperture) every day. Easily win an Android app of year. Together with everyone on their own site how web should be
