Hey #edtechchat if you want to get together and talk about owning your domain or moving your blog off someone else's platform come hang with us. Gonna talk websites and our identity as educators. https://x.com/ChrisAldrich/status/996862425029754880
@saragoldrickrab @dr_ddennis @mpolikoff @jonbecker I also jest. The folks in our grant office are committed to their jobs, helping us get awards, and supporting best they can. The problems are more system wide but I am not at R1 so it's also built in highered model
@benwerd But as I think about it I would rebuild WordPress the same way you've been trying to build the web for decades: standards, protocols, open platforms, and a service model on top....but mainly plain html
@saragoldrickrab @dr_ddennis @mpolikoff @jonbecker At our university the PI gets a cut of the indirect... No wait fringe. That goes to academic spending of choice. Though our pension cost so high nobody gets grants with fringe rates in 70-100% sometimes
Can anyone with a @reclaimHosting WordPress site that uses a MicroPub client to publish check their .htaccess file and tell me if it looks like this: http://bit.ly/2ImmhY2 trying to fix this: http://bit.ly/2L6fdw8
@dr_ddennis @mpolikoff @jonbecker @saragoldrickrab the slush fund off of indirects that goes directly to you spend as you please is nice, ability to skip red tape and lines, time. but plenty of red tape and expectations of in-kind time take down as many grants
@ubiquity75 @jeffjarvis But I agree. If Cliff's moonlighting is hurting his student that is an ethical violation and fault lies with both Cliff and the system for the exploitation of contingent faculty.
@ubiquity75 @jeffjarvis But if Cliff used university time or university equipment he should check his contract. Betchya University at minimum has use in perpetuity and possibly 100% ownership. The same doesn't happen with a book you write on a university computer. Again it is a bias of print.
@ubiquity75 @jeffjarvis Flip it? What if it was Open Source? A contract to build a wiki of Greek History? Why can't building the web be considered creative activity. Professors earn royalties stay up late and probably let Gas grade to write books. Why is html considered lesser than?
@ubiquity75 @jeffjarvis Cliff needs to be careful. If the university finds out how talented he is at web development they will have him rebuild the website for a bit of buy out time well below market rate.
@dsample @ChrisAldrich If open web is the goal I would go with the page building blocks built with CSS layout, but make the block source code available and remixable kinda like Beaker Browser
@dsample @ChrisAldrich I Agree. Long term I think the credit card vendor/PoS will own all the small business market. Turn key page without building invoice or inventory backend.... That is future WordPress should have bet on if money was goal.
Back to directly publishing on Twitter until I get me #indieweb life sorted. No webmentions for some reason on @withknown and no working endpoints for MicroPub on WordPress. #StuckInASiloWithYou
Remember when we used to think APIs would be open and allow for a more democratic web. .. https://developer.twitter.com/en/products/accounts-and-users/account-activity-api.html
