Finishing up the #tess18 @vconnecting session and hearing about holistic support for online teaching.
Greg McVerryI think about privacy and students #tess18 "open is not exposed" is a great concept....I never force anyone to join a commercial silo that suck up student data...but I want my students to own their data not their university.
Greg McVerryAlso bet you could use Bridgy to get to Twitter, the webmentions gem, or webmentions.io

Greg McVerry@christyirish1 #LRA18 has had plenty of OER study groups and ad-hoc open access committees. They write a report, the board does nothing, rinse and repeat. Same pattern for over decade We spent three years trying to move to an open source website and research repository....got shut down and replaced with commercial project. LRA too addicted to journal revenue
Greg McVerryAt same time #tess18 I am in educator prep and believe I have a responsibility to teach them how to operate in #openpedagogy, I call it privacy through data empowerment.
Greg McVerryIn this episode I wonder if it is better to give writers somethign to remix or encourage the use of the blank page
Greg McVerryLike idea of building rubric with students but also think about letting students choose just 1-2 criterion in a rubric to focus on. Yes we make comments all optional for private feedback. #tess18 #indieweb
Greg McVerryComputer science majors are a lot like classically trained musicians amazing talent, can do what no one else can, with clear instructions and a director, but ask them to pick a key and scale and just jam out and you often get blank stares.
Greg McVerryI don't think personalized learning means what you think it means: https://en.brinkwire.com/news/brooklyn-students-hold-walkout-in-protest-of-facebook-designed-online-program/ this is't personalized..it's depersonalized, dehumanizing the way @summitlearning is described. Why would you hand your school of to facebbook in fact #edu106 #edtetchchat #literacies
Greg McVerryJoining #tess18 with my #edu305 class here are our feeds, in terms of assessment, put onus on students to reflect and share how they meet criteria. http://edu305.jgregorymcverry.com/feeds.html
Greg McVerryIn many ways being open increases student privacy as they have the ability to own their data and know the university isn't doing weird stuff like correlating grades to meal points. #tess18
Greg McVerry@christyirish1 hasn't felt like the epitomy of literacy research as of late and the organization has resisted any efforts at Open Sourcing knowledge.
Greg McVerry@jaredcwhite if your CMS is written in Rails check out indieweb.org/ruby
Greg McVerryIt's also just part of a low travel budget. Flight and hotel to Palm Springs expensive. I basically can't afford to talk poverty and #literacies from such posh digs. If I mind will go.
Greg McVerryThinking of starting a podcast called "In between @audible books" where I just talk about learning during my hour-and-a-half commute
Greg McVerryHere is a reboot of my #edu106 class I did with my students. Halfway through class put them in charge of redesign. #tess18 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2zg76ywZlY&t=126s #teaching #instructionaldesign
Greg McVerryThank you @TheRealStanLee you changed the world by inventing new ones.
Greg McVerryI am trying to hold my self to a standard of only joining and supporting professional organizations with a commitment to #OpenScience. I am a public employee. Why should taxpayers pay twice to see my research? Hurts prestige. I am tenured. Privilege helps.
Greg McVerryJust removed the greedy folks of @hbo from my @dish plan. I literally paid @hbo hundreds if not thousands over the years and they treat us like garbage and want me to hand over even more money.
