Greg McVerry@MissCimato I also think people started discussing it today bc Simpsons made an artistic response to the film. Had they explored it differently (like in an episode staring Apu dealing with bigotry) maybe today we wouldnt see reaction
Greg McVerry@MissCimato If you go through my feed I said I am unsure how I feel and the much larger role of stereotypes in comedy. Especially on race. Could Blazing Saddles be made today? Not sure? Is that a good thing? Not sure? Did strike me watching the movie that folks were called "apu" as slang
Greg McVerry@ThatDrunkGeek @harikondabolu or there are only like 12 people still watching the Simpsons
Greg McVerry@MissCimato 30 years ago I was ten. My understandings may have evolved a bit since then. #problemwithapu
Greg McVerryI tried to discuss the #ProblemwithApu episode in my #highered class Only problem not one college age student watches the Simpsons. Never believed all the millennial criticism...till now
Greg McVerry@matt_barnum Not many in terms of interventions. Many scholars use NAEP items to develop assessments when states have different tests. I like this: http://bit.ly/2HkN6YI and this: http://bit.ly/2HlBepn feel this is important: http://bit.ly/2Hm9EYV
Greg McVerryNot sure Fagella-Luby's study suggest that lower readers need more intervention or if it is further evidence that SSR and independent reading have little instructional value in school: http://bit.ly/2HmhkKP #literacies
Greg McVerry@EmilyGorcenski This just brings up memories of Mind Control in Strange Brew for me
Greg McVerry@davewiner Only in British English. In American English we keep the e
Greg McVerry@d8aninja @BoomerangToons I also have vivid memories of my friends and I trying hard to nail the accent, "Thank You, Come Again" in the nineties. We were laughing at a stereotype and not seeing it as a peak behind the curtain of bigotry. That was and is wrong. #TheProblemWithApu
Greg McVerry@d8aninja Don't be messing with my Dudley Do-Right. That being said cartoons do make up for their mistakes. @BoomerangToons doesn't show Mammy Two-Shoes or Tom ever in Blackface #TheProblemwithApu https://t.co/3SLe1KBdFG
Greg McVerryKudos for Apu for standing up for himself by not joining the "Stereotypes" bowling team. I struggle with the role of satire in bringing issues of race to light Could Blazing Saddles be made today? Should it? #TheProblemWithApu https://t.co/EMcb3VSdkX
Greg McVerry@mathewi Maybe that's how Twitter fixes their verification problem. Only give to the blue check to good bots.
